The diaphragm is the primary muscle involved in the process of inhalation. When a person inhales, the diaphragm contracts and moves downward, creating a vacuum that allows air to flow into the lungs. This contraction increases the volume of the thoracic cavity, resulting in a decrease in pressure within the lungs compared to the outside atmosphere, which draws air in.

Inhalation is a crucial part of the respiratory process, and the diaphragm's unique shape and position make it particularly effective for this function. It separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity and is the most significant muscle for breathing, enabling efficient airflow and gas exchange in the lungs. Other muscles, such as the intercostals, also assist with inhalation, but the diaphragm serves as the primary mover, especially during quiet breathing.

The other muscles listed, while they contribute to various movements and functions in the body, do not play the primary role in inhalation. The rectus abdominis and transverse abdominis are mainly involved in core stability and forceful exhalation, whereas the external obliques also assist with trunk rotation and lateral flexion rather than directly facilitating inhalation.
